History of Carpet and Rugs

Thousand years ago , the skill of making carpets were developed in Central Asia.The migrant needed protection from harsh winter , something that was more easy than covering of sheepskin, also for decorating their tents. From the herds of goats and flock of sheep , the material used for the wrap, weft, and pile came.


Pazyryk-Carpet

In the 16th century, the skill of carpet was developed in Persia and India both technically and artistically , for example in court workshops. During the protection of the emperors, the most famous rug in the world, Ardabil Carpet, which can be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The carpet dates back to the year 946 after Islam count, which is 1539A.D and it took three years for five weavers to complete the carpet, which was ordered by Shah Tahmasp for the Sheik Safi mosque.

In the Turkey the Marby Carpet was made in the beginning of 15th century and was brought to Stockholm via a small village named by Marby. In USA the carpet is made by Persian knots, pile of wool, warp and weft by silk , with a knot density of 518.000 knots per square meter. The carpet was sold in the 19th century in order to pay for repairs of the great mosque in Ardabil north of Persia.
